Sibling Rivalry: Joe Jonas Was Jealous When Nick Jonas Landed ‘The Voice’ Coach Role

During an interview on the “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” podcast, Joe Jonas revealed that he was jealous when he found out his younger brother Nick had been asked to be a coach on “The Voice.” Nick had previously been a coach on “The Voice Australia” during its seventh season in 2018. The Jonas Brothers have experienced sibling rivalry throughout their careers, from their early days on Broadway to recent acting gigs, but they remain supportive of each other.

Joe Jonas admits he cried when he found out that his younger brother Nick Jonas was going to be a judge on “The Voice,” while Kevin Jonas reveals that Nick had previously served as a coach on “The Voice Australia” in 2018.

The Jonas Brothers have always been competitive with each other, even when it comes to their careers. Before Nick Jonas became a coach on The Voice, he was in direct competition with his older brother, Joe Jonas. During an episode of the “Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard” podcast, Joe revealed that he found out Nick would be a judge on The Voice while they were at a Fleetwood Mac concert, and he was so jealous that he cried during the performance of “Landslide.” Joe confessed he wanted the gig himself, but he thought Nick “crushed it” when he eventually took on the role.

The brothers have experienced sibling rivalry throughout their lives, from competing for early career milestones on Broadway to vying for acting gigs. Despite this, they want someone with the last name Jonas to win, Nick joked during the podcast. The brothers even recently went head-to-head for the same role in the upcoming movie adaptation of Wicked, but neither of them received the call.

Joe had previously served as a coach on The Voice Australia during its seventh season in 2018, but he enjoyed the job so much that he wanted to join the U.S. version too. Nick ended up joining the NBC panel for season 18 in 2020 and then returned for season 20, where he enlisted Joe and their older brother Kevin to appear as his team’s celebrity mentors.

The Jonas Brothers reunited as a band in 2019 following their 2013 hiatus and have continued to support each other’s careers. As Nick said on the podcast, “when it comes to our career, I think we genuinely both looked at each other and said, ‘Go in there and kill it.’ It has to be one of us.” Despite their competitiveness, they want each other to succeed.

The Wicked movie, which stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo as witches Galinda and Elphaba, respectively, will debut its first half in 2024. While it’s unclear which role the Jonas Brothers auditioned for, Jonathan Bailey is set to play leading man Fiyero, and Broadway veteran Ethan Slater will portray Boq. Regardless of their roles, the Jonas Brothers will undoubtedly continue to support each other’s careers.
