British poet, editor, and literary critic whose best-known work is his Victorian poem “Invictus.” His other works include a poetry collection entitled In Hospital and a work of literary criticism called Views and Reviews.

His daughter, Margaret, died at the age of five and became the inspiration for the character of Wendy in J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s novel Peter Pan.
