Mahonri Young was born in Salt Lake City. He financed his education at the the Art Students League of New York and the Académie Julian in France by working as an engraver for newspapers. He was a member of the Ashcan School and, as such, created artwork depicting gritty, urban scenes. He sometimes returned to his roots and sculpted statues of his famous grandfather and other Mormon pioneers.
