Lindley Evans was born in South Africa. He was an accompanist for flautist John Lemmoné and opera singer Dame Nellie Melba, the latter collaboration beginning in 1922 and continuing until her death. He was a long-standing member and eventually president of the arts-oriented Sydney Savage Club.
