Jose Saramago was born in Portugal. He attended technical school and briefly worked as a car mechanic before becoming an assistant editor for the Portuguese newspaper, Diario de Noticias. He published his first work, Terra do Pecado (Land of Sin), in 1947. His novel, The Clairvoyant, was posthumously published in 2011.
