Jim Pepper was born in Oregon. He formed The Free Spirits in 1965, making it one of the first bands to fuse jazz and rock aesthetics. He the recipient of a posthumous Lifetime Musical Achievement Award by First Americans in the Arts in 1999 and was inducted into the Native American Music Awards Hall of Fame a year later.
