Pioneer pharmacologist who was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for developing new drugs leukemia, gout, and malaria among others. She became the first woman to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1991.

Gertrude B. Elion was born in New York City. She earned her masters degree from New York University in 1941. Her methods would be used to play a key role in the development of the AIDS medication AZT and in 1991 she became the first woman to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
