Ethel Griffies was born in England. She performed in her first London stage production in 1899 and went on to make her Broadway debut in a 1904 production of Havoc. She played the character Grace Poole in the 1934 and 1943 screen adaptations of Charlotte Bronte ‘s famous novel Jane Eyre.
