In 1831, this Irish Catholic nun established the order of the Sisters of Mercy and dedicated the last ten years of her life to education-centered charity efforts. During her time as Sister Mary Catherine, McAuley opened fourteen English and Irish branches of the Sisters of Mercy and expanded the order to include 150 members.
