Catherine McAuley was born on the 29th of September, 1778. She was best known for being a Religious Leader. In 1831, this Irish Catholic nun established the order of the Sisters of Mercy and dedicated the last ten years of her life to education-centered charity efforts. During her time as Sister Mary Catherine, McAuley opened fourteen English and Irish branches of the Sisters of Mercy and expanded the order to include 150 members.

The Sisters of Mercy began after McAuley used a large sum of money she had inherited to build a center in Dublin, Ireland for the care and education of impoverished women and children. After her death, her Sisters of Mercy organization expanded its reach to New Zealand, Argentina, Australia, and the United States and, by the early 21st Century, had grown to a membership of approximately 10,000.
